Overcoming Perfectionism and Finding Freedom in Imperfection

If you like me, are constantly chasing the unattainable standard of flawlessness and become paralyzed by the possibility of failure, read on.

Perfectionism can be a double-edged sword, driving us to excel but also causing undue stress and slowing our progress. Fear not, though, as we dive into some practical strategies that have helped me overcome the perfectionism monster and find peace in imperfection (it’s a work in progress).

Recognize the Perfectionism Trap

The first step toward overcoming perfectionism is acknowledging its presence in our lives. Reflect on how your need for perfectionism affects your daily routines, relationships, and overall well-being. Awareness is key to breaking free from this cycle and taking control of your mindset. I started keeping track of my progress and sharing it on social media as form of accountability. I also use my daily journaling to write about my accomplishments no matter how small. Seeing what I’ve accomplished motivates me to keep going.

Embrace the Power of "Good Enough"

Let's face it: nothing is perfect. Striving for perfection often leads to unnecessary delays and stress. Instead, focus on doing your best and accepting that "good enough" is, well, good enough! Give yourself permission to let go of the need for flawless outcomes and embrace the concept of progress over perfection. The only way you fail is if you stop. Waiting for perfect means never finishing and eventually you start to believe you’ll never finish, but if you finish a story, a poem, a first even if it’s not perfect, you have prove you can reach the finish line.

Challenge Negative Self-Talk

Perfectionists tend to be their harshest critics, constantly berating themselves for any perceived shortcomings. Challenge those negative self-talk patterns by questioning their validity. Treat yourself with the same kindness and compassion you would extend to a friend. Remember, making mistakes and learning from them is a natural part of growth. Shutting down the editor in your head, by telling them their turn will come, but now is your turn at the wheel.

Set Realistic Goals

Perfectionists often set unrealistic expectations for themselves, which only sets them up for disappointment. Instead, break down your goals into manageable steps. Focus on making incremental progress, rather than aiming for an unattainable end result. Celebrate small victories along the way, as they add up to significant achievements over time. I make a daily list of the small goals I want to accomplish, every morning as part of my journaling routine, I check off everything I accomplished the day before. It helps me stay focus and the forward progress keeps me motivated.

 
 

Embrace Imperfection as a Learning Opportunity

View mistakes and failures as valuable learning experiences rather than indicators of personal incompetence. Recognize that setbacks and imperfections are stepping stones toward growth and improvement. Embrace the lessons learned and apply them to future endeavors. Every time I finish a manuscript I learn something new. With my last project I started to keep a journal of the lessons I’ve learned. These include: checking I’ve used all five senses in a scene and using setting to trigger a character’s development.

Prioritize Self-Care

Perfectionism can be mentally and physically draining. Make self-care a priority in your life. Engage in activities that bring you joy, practice mindfulness or meditation, and maintain a balanced lifestyle. Taking care of your well-being will help you develop resilience and combat the overwhelming demands of perfectionism.

Overcoming perfectionism is a process that requires patience, self-reflection, and a willingness to challenge your mindset. Remember, perfection is an illusion, and the pursuit of it often hinders progress and personal growth. Embrace imperfection as an opportunity for learning and self-discovery. By implementing these strategies and adopting a more forgiving and compassionate attitude toward yourself, you can break free from the clutches of perfectionism and lead a more fulfilling and balanced life.
